With the era of the Internet, it is very common to hear about cybercrime. The term is used  without full understanding of what it is all about. Computer and online users do not understand its meaning, the laws associated with it, the coverage and its possible victims.



Many believe that only big businesses, famous individuals and celebrities are vulnerable to the crime. But this is definitely a misconception. Everyone is a potential victim and thus, everyone should be concerned about it. It can affect you, your children, friends, family or any loved one who use the computer and the internet.



One of the most common crimes committed online is the identity theft. Criminals steal your critical information like full name, phone number, address, password, credit card number, bank account details and social security number.



They use the information to ruin your public image and destroy your integrity and hack your personal bank account and steal money from you. The hackers enter your accounts through several ways. They send links that when clicked will open your online confidential information.

Another form of cyber crime is hacking. Lawless individuals steal files and documents for various reasons. They intercept data, delete or modify important information and spread viruses to cause devastating results.

Many of the hackers attack the operating system of the computer to accomplish their goals. They may not only work because of monetary gain but with the thrill and excitement of hacking.



For many people, especially those in the business sector, putting a stop to cyber crime is their main goal. They improve their own security settings and they invest with online protective devices and software to enhance their safety.Anti-virus, malware scan and installation of firewall is one of the most common measures.



They are important because every second, sheer amount of wealth and information is passed through the Internet Hackers look for the weakest links so that they can break in

If people continuously update their settings to secure themselves, criminals also take advantage of the latest technology to pose threat. Remember that computer crimes get advanced each passing day and there is no excuse why you should not be protected.



The government has also taken steps to stop cyber crime. However, the jurisdiction of the laws varies from one state to another and from one country to another. Criminals perform their illegal acts in countries where the crime is not yet a law. Tracing the perpetrator is another challenge for the authorities.



It can be quite difficult to find the criminal considering that they also use false identity when they are online. Another loophole of the law is that it only covers individuals who “knowingly and willingly” did the offense. Without a good cyber lawyer, this can be difficult to prove.

Despite the presence of various internet security devices and software, no one is 100% protected. Everyone should be vigilant. Every computer and internet user should be smart. Do not give your personal information online.
