How to be Safe on the Web

There is this saying “better safe than sorry,” this can be applied on different life events including internet surfing. The internet has lots of benefits. It makes life easier and more convenient.

However, users should also be open to the fact that there they are putting themselves into risks when they share information in the internet. This is the reason why they need to be very careful.
There are different ways to observe security in the internet. With the proper knowledge, no one needs to fall victim to these criminals who know nothing but to hurt others.

  • The first thing that internet users should do is to check if they have an active firewall. Firewall is very important because it will filter what comes in and out of the computer.

  • Remember do not surf the internet if the firewall is not active. This is like going in a battle without weapons. Viruses are everywhere. They even come in different forms.  Make sure to have a firewall first.

  • This may be an unpopular opinion but it will be best to use another Internet Browsers instead of Internet Explorer. This browser is the target of every hacker. The reason for such is because the majority of users use Internet Explorer.

So, do not join the hype. Use another browser. There are tons available around like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and more. Once the right browser has been chosen already, don’t let the browsers automatically remember the passwords. This is risky. Doing this is like giving other people the access to a user’s account. Virus developers also make use of this method to sniff through the cookies. With that, they can find the username and passwords. This can be very dangerous especially if the account is bank-related.

So, just type the username and the password manually. This will not hurt.
Putting and sharing private data in the internet is also a big no no! Private information maybe in the form of credit card information, real name, address and so on. This can be done if it is really essential.

However, it will be safe to check first if the internet is secured. Usually, checking the security of the website is done by finding the lock that can be seen on the browser.

  • Treat passwords and usernames with discretion. Avoid giving them to other people. These things are personal. It will not hurt if they will not be shared to anyone.

  • Aside from this, it will be best to avoid repeating the username and passwords over and over. Make sure to use different usernames and passwords for accounts in e-mails, online banking, and other accounts. This will prevent hackers from getting information.

  • If the usernames and passwords are all the same, the accounts are definitely at risk because it will be easier for other people to guess on and have access.

These things may sound a bit hard at first. Having a list on the new passwords and usernames can be done just in case.
