Venezuelan Chocolate and the Troubles it has regarding Its Production

Venezuela is a highly urbanized city which is located at the northern part of South America, and it is also one of the most dangerous. However, Venezuela is not limited to such bad reputation. Its cacao is one of the best in the world, if not, the best.

You can taste a certain degree of sweetness coming from their cacao seeds. That is why their cacaos are one of the most sought after products across the globe. As a result, more chocolate manufacturing companies looks towards their direction for such an invaluable commodity.

The History that Venezuelan Believes

The origin of chocolate has never been clear. There have been many versions told about how it was first introduced to the world. The Venezuelans have one of theirs as well, and it is one that they believe is true.

Venezuelans believe that the cacao plant originated in an area south of Lake Maracaibo. It was distributed by pre-Columbian traders throughout Latin America until it reached Mexico. It was there that the Spaniards made the discovery of the cacao, and brought it back to Europe, claiming the rights of being the discoverers of the plant which started one of the biggest industries of the modern period.

This is a huge contradiction to the common knowledge that the Spaniard conquistadors were the discoverers of the plant. Though it may not coincide with the usual story, there might be some truth behind it. Considering the conditions that cacao is best accustomed to growing, Venezuela is a perfect fit. In fact, this may have been the reason behind the country’s top grade cacao.

In addition, the climate of Venezuela makes it the best place for cacaos to ferment. Considering that it is an important process in the creation of top grade chocolate, it might add proof to the claims of Venezuelans with regards to the origins of the cacao.

The Trouble it has in Producing Venezuelan Chocolate

Again, Venezuela is considered to be one of the leading producers of cacao across the globe. Their products are considered to be one of the best, if not the best in the industry. That is why such condition raise questions such as “Why won’t Venezuela produce their personal version of the chocolate?”

It is true that Venezuela has one of the best cacaos across the globe in terms of quality; however, it is also because of that why most chocolate manufacturers turn to them for its supply. As a result, most of the cacao in the country has been exported, leaving only a little bit for the locals to work on.

In relation to that, the government is concentrating their efforts in increasing its production of cacao. Such plans may have given some local chocolate manufacturers some light in their business. Unfortunately, the aim of the project is to produce as many cacaos for the purpose of export. This still puts the locality at a disadvantage.

In addition, most of their time is being spent on producing the cacaos, which leaves them no time to develop a recipe that can be patented as Venezuelan.

With the Little Cacao they have Left

Considering the amount of sweet cacao left for their use, the Venezuelans have been able to create chocolate that is good for your health. Though this bodes well from a marketing standpoint, the cost of exporting such products can be costly. That is why it is only sold locally.

In spite of being placed in such situation, Venezuela still was able to produce at least one international chocolate company, El Rey. However, they have the same problem with other chocolate manufacturers operating in the region. However, because they are fortunate enough to get good revenue from their operations in the United States, they are able to get by.

Hearing the situation in Venezuela is unfortunate. Hopefully, the government can find ways which can help these local companies grow internationally. For the meantime, they should just settle in being the producers, though soon, they should work on becoming the top manufacturer.
