German Chocolate Pancakes

Pancake is a sweet alimentation normally served for breakfast. It is made with eggs, flour, sugar, milk, vanilla, cinnamon or fruits for an added flavor.  It is served with a freshly squeezed lemon, butter, fruit topping, powdered sugar or syrup.

 

The pancake is often the specialty of some food chains that specializes in breakfast dishes. The cost of each serving depends on how flavorful the dish is made and of course, the name of the restaurant you are eating.

 

In history, pancake is probably the earliest form of cereal eaten by the early people. Today, many variations have existed. One variety of the whimsical layers of cake is the chocolate German Pancake. Itis also called as the Dutch baby pancake or a Dutch puff.

 

It is made from several layers of chocolate pancake and mouthwatering toppings to excite your taste buds. Here is the basic step-by-step procedure on how you can do it.

 

Ingredients

  • 2 cups general flour

  • ½ cup sugar

  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa

  • 1 ½ tbsp. baking powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 cups milk

  • 3 large eggs

  • ½ sweet chocolate bar, finely chopped

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • German Chocolate syrup

Procedure

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Whisk together the sugar, flour , unsweetened cocoa, baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl.

  3. In another bowl, combine milk, egg, chopped chocolate bar, melted butter and vanilla extract.

  4. Gradually stir in the milk mixture with the flour mixture and mix well until all clumps disappear. You should have a smooth mixture at this time but do not overmix the batter.

  5. Pour ¼ cup of the batter onto a hot non-stick skillet. Cook for 3 minutes or until the top is covered with bubbles and the edges look dry and cooked.

  6. Turn to the other side and cook for another 3 minutes or until done.

  7. Bake the German chocolate pancakes for 15 minutes until puff and golden brown.

  8. Remove from oven, layer the pancakes and sandwich them with German chocolate syrup in between. You can make as many layers as you desire.

  9. Cut them into four to six slices and serve with powdered sugar, cinnamon, jam, chocolate chips, fresh fruit and even bits of meat like bacon or ham on top.

 

A modification of this recipe is by adding fresh or canned strawberry in the ingredients. While layering the pancakes, add the sliced and stemmed fruit in between. This will give a twist to your regular Chocolate German pancake.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup butter

  • 4 eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup chocolate chips

  • 1 can strawberry or 1 basket fresh strawberries

Procedure:

  1. In a bowl, blend all the ingredients except the strawberries and mix well until smooth.

  2. Pour the batter in a hot skillet and cook both sides. Place the pancakes in a baking dish and sprinkle with chocolate chips. Bake them until puffed.

  3. Sandwich the strawberries in between the pancake and serve.

 

Because this is a breakfast dish, it is best if you serve this with your favorite morning beverage. Some recommendations include a hot tea, coffee, chocolate or fresh fruit juices. The moist and soft texture of the pancake will surely melt in your mouth along with your beverage.

 

Different countries and regions around the world have modified their pancakes. In Britain, they do not add a raising agent to it and they make pancakes similar to a crepe. The one that we made today is an adaptation of the American style which adds baking powder to it.
