Cheat’s Chocolate Trifle

Cheat’s Chocolate Trifle is one of the classic recipes for a chocolate dessert. It does not require heavy cooking skills and it is not too demanding as other recipes. Because it only needs little time, anyone can make this at home.

Serve it at your upcoming events like birthdays, Thanksgiving Party or any simple weekend gathering, and for sure, your guests will be delighted with this sweet and mouthwatering course.

First thing to do is to get all the ingredients ready. Because cherry is one of the mainstays in the chocolate trifle, you need to presoak them in rum overnight. Turn them every now and then so that all parts will absorb the rum. The number of cherries depends on how much you will need for your recipe. Once your cherries are done, the preparation time will only take you minutes.

Facts About Trifle

Trifle is a dessert dish made from thick custard, fruit, sponge cake, jelly, whipped cream or fruit juice. All ingredients are arranged in layers with fruit and sponge on the bottom and custard and cream on top. Some trifles contain  small amounts of alcohol to flavor the fruits. Non-alcoholic versions use fruit juice instead of rum to moisten the cake. Other countries call it as “Sherry Trifle” and “High Church”.

Aside from a dessert course, Chocolate Trifle is also used as a decoration. The play on colors like layers of jelly, fruit and jam along with the contrast provided by the custard and white cream make a festive celebration. This is often served at Christmas especially in many European countries and American states.

Ingredients

  • 3 Double-Chocolate Chip America-style Muffins
  • 200 grams dark chocolate
  • 680 grams cherries soaked in dark rum
  • 250 grams mascarpone
  • 400 grams fresh custard
  • 275 ml whipping cream

Procedure

  1. Slice the American-style muffins in half and spread cherry jam on each side. Re-assemble them and then slice them vertically to make four equal slices.
  2. Place the muffin slices in the decorative glass. They will serve as the main base of the chocolate trifle. Add a tablespoon of the cherry juice over the muffins and scatter the cherries on top.
  3. Break the dark chocolates into smaller pieces and gently melt them in a bowl place over a pan of simmering water. Do this until the chocolate is smooth. Allow it to cool a little.
  4. While waiting, beat the mascarpone in a bowl and add the custard. Now, add the melted chocolate and whisk all together.
  5. Pour the mixture over the muffins and chill for at least 2 hours in the refrigerator.
  6. After 2 hours, whip the cream and pile it over the trifle. Spread it out using a palette knife.
  7. Grate dark chocolate and sprinkle on top for garnishing. Cover with clingfilm and chill until needed.
  8. Makes 8 servings.

Preparation Tip

  • Cheat’s Chocolate Trifle becomes more appetizing with presentation. To make your masterpiece, it is preferable if you make use of a nice decorative glass to serve the dish. Look for glasses that can accommodate 4 pints or 2 ½ liters. If you need more servings, just multiply the ingredients into your desired number.
  • Allow the chocolate to melt slowly. Never use direct heat. This can burn the chocolates and leave an odd taste.
  • American-style muffin is the traditional ingredient for the Cheat’s Chocolate Trifle. You may also consider using other muffins if this one is not available. Other potential bases for your dessert are sponge or pound cake.
